Steal EVERYTHING from your Opponents with this Voltron Deck! | Kotis, the Fangkeeper

OVERVIEW

Want to play a powerful Voltron commander that’s going to steal the cards off the top of your opponents’ decks?

Kotis is a 2/1 Zombie Warrior with indestructible and reach. Whenever Kotis deals combat damage to a player, you exile the top X cards of their library, where X is the amount of damage dealt. Then you may cast any number of spells with mana value X or less from among them without paying their mana costs.

So the name of the game here is Voltron. We’re going to buff up Kotis so we can maximize his trigger by increasing his power and getting more value from every combat. When playing the deck, you’ll want to strategically target the player who’s going to give you the most valuable hits. If you need blockers, target the player running lots of big creatures. If there’s another Voltron commander at the table, keep buffing Kotis so you can keep up with them. This deck is really cool because there are so many different ways to pilot it depending on the situation at your table.

MUTATE PACKAGE

Mutate is an alternate casting cost that lets you stack a creature on top of or underneath another creature, and the resulting creature gets all the text from the pile. Normally Mutate is risky because you’re putting multiple cards into one body, but since Kotis is indestructible, that downside is much less relevant here. Glowstone Recluse gives reach and adds +1/+1 counters whenever you mutate in the future, helping scale Kotis’ damage. Brokkos, Apex of Forever gives trample to push through combat damage and can be cast from the graveyard with mutate for built-in recursion. Auspicious Starrix provides trample and lets you return mutate cards from your graveyard to your hand when you deal combat damage. Boneyard Lurker gives us even more recursion by returning a permanent from our graveyard to our hand whenever we mutate.

BUFFS & AURAS

Hydra’s Growth starts small but doubles its counters every upkeep, which gets out of control quickly on an indestructible commander. Tyrant’s Soulcleaver gives vigilance and grows Kotis whenever creatures or artifacts go to the graveyard. Auramancer's Guise rewards us for stacking auras and equipment. Loxodon Warhammer gives +3/+0, trample, and lifelink, which helps stabilize our life total when we’re all-in on one creature. And of course, Eldrazi Conscription is the big finisher, giving +10/+10, trample, and annihilator 2.

RAMP

Most of the ramp package is your usual staples—Rampant Growth, Cultivate, and the signets—but Migratory Greathorn is a standout because it repeatedly ramps every time we mutate. Strong Back (your cost-reduction piece) helps reduce equip and aura costs while also buffing Kotis.

DRAW

Well-Rested draws a card, gains life, and adds counters whenever the enchanted creature untaps. Key to the Vault acts like a Kotis trigger for your own deck, letting you cast spells for free after combat damage. Combat Research is simple and efficient card draw. Tasha, the Witch Queen lets us draw cards, cast our opponents’ spells, and create value whenever we play cards we don’t own.

INTERACTION

Champion’s Helm gives hexproof and a stat boost. Tamiyo’s Safekeeping / Overprotect provides instant-speed protection. Thran Power Suit buffs Kotis and gives ward. For disruption, Gemrazer and Chittering Harvester give us repeatable removal through mutate, and Astarion’s Thirst doubles as removal and a massive power boost.

WIN CONS

Belt of Giant Strength sets Kotis to a base 10/10. Trailblazer’s Boots makes him nearly unblockable. Felix Five-Boots doubles Kotis’ combat damage trigger. Ivy, Gleeful Spellthief copies our auras and single-target buffs for extra value.
