Don't Skip These GREEN Cards for Your Commander Collection! | Collecting for Commander
OVERVIEW
If you want to get into Commander but don’t know where to start—or you’re looking to strengthen your collection with staple cards—you’re in the right place. I’m Anton from Four Knights, and this is Collecting for Commander, where we highlight essential cards to pick up when you’re just getting started. Today, we’re focusing on green.

Green’s identity in Magic: The Gathering revolves around big creatures and explosive growth. It excels at ramping—generating extra mana—so you can cast massive threats earlier than expected. If you’re looking to improve consistency and dominate in combat, adding green to your deck is a strong choice.
Now that we understand green’s core strengths, let’s break down some of the most versatile cards you can add to almost any green deck. We’ll organize these by function, starting with ramp.
RAMP
Green has an abundance of sorceries that accelerate your mana by searching for lands. Cards like Farseek, Nature’s Lore, Rampant Growth, Cultivate, and Kodama’s Reach all help you find lands from your library and put them onto the battlefield or into your hand. These are foundational pieces for nearly every green deck, and picking up a few copies is always a solid investment. Crop Rotation offers a slightly different approach. As an instant, it requires you to sacrifice a land, but in exchange you can search for any land you need—including powerful utility lands that support your strategy. Enchantments like Wild Growth provide a simple but effective boost by making lands produce extra mana. More advanced options like Dryad of the Ilysian Grove and Exploration allow you to play multiple lands each turn, though they’re often better pickups once you’ve built out your collection. Beyond lands, green is known for “mana dorks”—creatures that tap to produce mana. Classic examples include Llanowar Elves, Elvish Mystic, and Birds of Paradise. While some of these can be pricier, they’re incredibly efficient. Sakura-Tribe Elder (often called “Steve”) is another standout, letting you sacrifice it to fetch a land. Tireless Provisioner adds flexibility by creating Treasure tokens whenever a land enters the battlefield, allowing you to store mana for later turns. Some mana creatures scale with your board. Fanatic of Rhonas can generate a large burst of mana if you control a creature with power 4 or greater. Enduring Vitality turns all your creatures into mana producers, while Selvala, Heart of the Wilds both draws cards and generates mana based on your creatures’ power—making it especially powerful in green decks.
DRAW
Speaking of card draw, green has several ways to keep your hand full. Cards like Garruk’s Uprising, Beast Whisperer, and Guardian Project reward you for playing creatures by drawing cards as they enter the battlefield. Others, like Return of the Wildspeaker and Rishkar’s Expertise, scale with your creatures’ power, making them perfect for “go big” strategies. Meanwhile, cards like Shamanic Revelation and Inspiring Call reward wide boards filled with creatures or +1/+1 counters. Even simple options like Harmonize or sacrifice-based draw like Greater Good have their place, especially since green has fewer raw draw tools compared to other colors.
INTERACTION
When it comes to interaction, green takes a different approach. Rather than relying heavily on removal, it often wins through combat or “fighting” mechanics. Still, staples like Beast Within are essential, as they can destroy any permanent. For artifacts and enchantments, cards like Reclamation Sage, Nature’s Claim, and Krosan Grip provide efficient answers. Protection is another area where green shines. Heroic Intervention is a standout, giving your entire board hexproof and indestructible—perfect for both offense and defense. Tamiyo’s Safekeeping offers similar protection for a single permanent, while Snakeskin Veil adds a +1/+1 counter along with hexproof. Seedborn Muse takes a different approach by untapping your permanents each turn, letting you stay aggressive without leaving yourself vulnerable.
STAPLE CARD
Beyond these categories, there are several staple cards that support a wide range of green strategies. Eternal Witness is a go-to recursion tool, letting you return cards from your graveyard to your hand. Cards like Hardened Scales and Forgotten Ancient enhance counter-based strategies, while Ghalta, Primal Hunger offers a massive creature at a reduced cost in creature-heavy decks. Toski, Bearer of Secrets provides reliable card draw and is difficult to remove thanks to indestructible. Token strategies benefit from cards like Rampaging Baloths and Scute Swarm, which generate creatures through landfall triggers. For combat-focused decks, Unnatural Growth doubles your creatures’ power and toughness each combat, while Ohran Frostfang grants deathtouch and card draw. And of course, Craterhoof Behemoth remains one of the most iconic finishers, turning a wide board into an immediate win condition.
SAUCY OPTIONS
If you have a bit more budget to work with, there are also some premium upgrades worth considering. Sylvan Library offers powerful card selection at the cost of life. Worldly Tutor ensures consistency by fetching key creatures. Doubling Season and Parallel Lives dramatically increase your token and counter production, though Doubling Season affects all players. Finally, The Great Henge provides cost reduction, card draw, and +1/+1 counters, making it one of the most impactful—albeit expensive—cards available.
